Protecting the Environment and the People
Dominion Diamond Corporation produces at both the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines. These have been carefully designed, through extensive consultation with the Aboriginal communities, to protect the wildlife in the Lac de Gras Area. The mines are signatories to environmental agreements involving the local Aboriginal groups as well as the federal and territorial governments. Since the discovery of diamonds in the 1990’s the mine sites have been subjected to intensive environmental assessments. Priority has been given to ensuring the long-term integrity of the land, water and wildlife in the Northwest Territories; these are paramount to the local Aboriginal traditions. The company holds quarterly engagement meetings with communities and regular impact Benefit Agreement (“IBA”) meetings, workshops, environmental monitoring programs and site visits with elders and the youth of the communities. Aboriginal leadership is a priority in the development of a diverse and strong workforce as well as this Dominion offer a scholarship programme to the youth wishing to advance their education.
